A round board changes how food looks on it. Wedges of cheese, a spiral of salami, figs pushed out toward the edge — the shape does half the arranging for you, which is why round boards photograph well and rectangles need more work.
Eighteen inches across is generous. It holds a full spread for a party without crowding, and it's large enough to be the centerpiece rather than a side element.
The juice groove means it still works as a cutting board when you need one. Walnut is dark and dramatic under pale cheese; maple is light and lets the food carry the color.
